Bill Stumpf
1936-2006
Trained in industrial design at the University of Illinois and environmental design at the University of Wisconsin, Bill Stumpf joined the staff at the Herman Miller Research Corporation in 1970. In 1994, Stumpf partnered with Don Chadwick to produce the iconic Aeron chair. Stumpf’s pioneering research and ergonomic designs have had a profound influence on office environments, also fueling Herman Miller’s transformation into a research-driven, problem-solving innovator. Stumpf was named the winner of the National Design Award in Product Design in 2006, presented posthumously by the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.
