Ernesto Gismondi
b. 1931
Trained in both design and engineering in Milan, Ernesto Gismondi established the lighting manufacturing firm Artemide with Sergio Mazza in 1959. He designed several lights, including the ‘Tholos’ wall lamp and the ‘Tebe’ floor lamps. Gismondi was highly involved in Italy’s progressive design circles, serving as both a sponsor and president to the Memphis design group, vice-president of the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (Industrial Design Association), and member of the council for the Milan Triennale. The Artemide group continues to operate as a leader in international lighting design, with production centers in Italy, France, Germany, the USA, Hungary and the Czech Republic.
