Florence Knoll
b. 1917
Considered by many to be one of the preeminent designers of the 20th century, Florence Knoll rethought and redefined interior space planning. A protege of Eero Saarinen and Mies van der Rohe, Knoll conceived the concept of "total design," which takes into consideration all aspects of a space. More than 60 years later, her techniques are still industry standard. Over the years, Knoll's work has been a mainstay at institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art, The Smithsonian, and The Philadelphia Museum of Art. In honor of her lifetime achievement, in 2002 Florence Knoll Bassett was awarded the National Medal of Arts by the National Endowment for the Arts'.
