Created by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the German Pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona Exposition, the Barcelona Chair served as thrones for the King and Queen of Spain when they visited the Pavilion.

Since it first appeared in Barcelona, the chair has enjoyed popularity worldwide. Mies re-designed the original chair in 1950 to make use of stainless steel which had become available due to a recent advancement in technology.

Today, the frame is made with a polished chrome or stainless steel frame. The stainless steel frame is welded in a single piece construction for ultimate durability. Stainless steel and chrome frames are hand-buffed to a mirror finish while individual leather panels are cut, hand-welted and hand-tufted to form the back and seat of the chair. Panels and buttons are crafted from a single hide.

The Barcelona Chair remains a fully licensed classic from Knoll®. The KnollStudio logo and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's signature are stamped into the frame of each piece.
