Maarten van Severen
1956-2005
A native of Antwerp, Belgium, Maarten van Severen studied architecture at the Saint Lucas Art Academy in Ghent. In 1986 he designed his first furniture pieces, and proceeded to establish his own workshop. Severen unified the process of design and production, using industrial materials and strict geographic forms to create tables, chairs, chaises, credenzas, and shelving units. He collaborated extensively during the 1990s with Rem Koolhaas, also a Dutch architect, to produce interiors for his buildings.
