Verner Panton
1926-1998
A revolutionary in Danish furniture design, Verner Panton’s innovative and playful designs are considered some of the most influential products of the 1960s. Having trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Panton began his career at Arne Jacobsen’s architectural firm. He established his own studio in 1955, his first major project of designing his parents’ Kom-igen guesthouse resulted in the creation of the ‘Cone Chair.’ Panton is perhaps best known for his ‘Panton Chair’ (originally ‘Stacking Chair’), the world’s first one-piece molded plastic chair. Although designed in 1960, the Panton Chair was not manufactured until Herman Miller succeeded in mass-producing the chair in 1968– becoming an instant success.
